English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
NELRC provides professional development to programs, communities, and states that want to build the capacity to offer participatory ESOL instruction. We offer TA to organizations that are starting up new ESOL services as well as support to established programs that want to develop curriculum, implement ESOL standards, expand ESOL instruction to include civics, or otherwise improve program quality.
NELRC also partners with other institutions to develop and disseminate teaching resources to the field. We have collaborated with California Literacy to compile an online ESOL resource collection and with Independent Television and Video Services (ITVS) and the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) to create teaching guides that accompany films about the immigrant and refugee experience in America.
Staff expertise also includes workplace ESOL, EL/civics, and ESOL family literacy. We offer workshops, mini-courses and consultations in the following areas:
- Participatory Adult ESOL Instruction
- Putting the "Civics" into EL/Civics
- ESL for the Workplace
NELRC’s ESOL workshops are developed and led by
