What do you look for when you use the internet? What
kinds of sites are interesting to you?
Make a list of five sites you like to visit. Talk to a partner, and
see the sites your partner likes. Tell each other what you like about
the sites and why you like them.
Looking at each site, ask yourself and your partner these questions:
- Who sponsors, or pays for the site?
- If you go to the contact page, what email or regular
mail address appears? Is there a person's name to contact?
- Do any of your sites sell things directly?
- Do any of your sites have banner ads? (Banner ads are advertisments
that appear, usually at the top of the screen. You can click on the
ads to go to a site that sells something or tells you about buying something
somewhere else.
Now, see if you and your partner know about any news
Web sites. (If you need help, there are some news Web
sites listed below)
- Find a news story that appears on two or more news sites. Print out
the story from three of the sites. Read the stories carefully to see
if they all include the same facts:
What is the story about? What happened? -- who, what, where, when,
why, how
Who wrote the story? Is there any information about the author?
Are there differences between the stories? What are the differences?
Why are the stories different?
Who is the site's sponsor? Who is the intended audience? (Who do
you think the site is for?), How useful is the site to you -- is it
clear? easy to read? Can you understand the writing?
Do you notice any bias - do you think the people who put
the information on the site have a strong opinion about the information
they put up on the site? How can you tell?
